My Review

Given the range of authors and titles in this box set, any cozy mystery lover is sure to find something they’ll enjoy.  I didn’t have time to read all of the books in time for this post so I poked around the list of books and selected A Body on Fitzgerald’s Bluff by Anna Celeste Burke to start off with.

The first book in the author’s newest series, A Body on Fitzgerald’s Bluff features a group of women who reside at Seaview Cottages, a seaside community for adults over 55.  Miriam Webster, their newest and youngest resident, comes across a dead body while taking her dog for an early morning walk on the beach.  Despite the police warning her to let them handle the investigation, she is soon joined by a gaggle of grand old lady detectives who are on a mission to learn everything they can about the victim.  This cozy whodunnit features a warm and caring group of women, quirky at times, but very likeable.  The story moved along at a nice pace with a variety of suspects and motives divulged as the plot unfolds.  And with its seaside setting, A Body on Fitzgerald’s Bluff is sure to please cozy mystery lovers in search of a fun beach read this summer.

Ha!
But seriously: She writes happy romantic comedies, mysteries, and urban fantasies. Amy is the former East Coast Editor of SURFER Magazine but the urge to drive up and down the coast interviewing surfers has long since left her. Colleen Helme

She started out writing children’s stories, and her stories grew as she did. She discovered a gift for humor and a love for making people laugh with her tales, and the Trailer Park Princess series was born.

Kim loves to not only make her readers laugh and entertain them with a good mystery, but also to examine the issues the everyday people face…well, every day. Issues like faith and forgiveness, perseverance and tolerance. Set in Lubbock, Texas, the fun books feature a cast of quirky characters, outrageous situations, a drama queen of a dog, and from time to time, a tear or two.

Kim lives with her husband of more than thirty years and two teenage kids in Texas.

Ava Mallory

Ava Mallory has been a grade school teacher, a psychiatric technician, a dementia unit nurse manager, and a Hospice nurse. She and her eternally annoyed children share their home with a massive collection of books and a never-ending supply of new book ideas.

Susan Boles

Susan Boles is the award-winning author of the Lily Gayle Lambert Mystery Series and also writes romantic suspense in the Brotherhood Protectors series.

A lifelong long love of all things mysterious led Susan to write cozy mysteries. Nancy Drew and Trixie Belden were the first to show her that girls can be crime solvers. Agatha Christie showed her that even small towns have big secrets. And Phryne Fisher showed her lady detectives can be outrageously individual. She lives in Mississippi with her rescue mini dachshund, Lucy, and her rescue cat of no particular breed, Zimba.

Anne R. Tan

Anne R. Tan fell in love with storytelling in elementary school, but decided to study engineering so she could get a “real job.” Her day job is her vacation from home and she moonlights as a writer to keep the voices inside her head under control. She is a toddler wrangler and a part-time short-order cook for her family. She is married to her version of Bob Vila who believes everything needs to be fixed, even if it’s already working. The koi fish in her pond are the only sane members of her household.

Excerpt – Dating the It Guy

“By the way, did you hear Lauren got into Senator Agretti’s old school?”

“Seriously? I wonder if she applied there because Brendon did,” I said.

Margaux snorted. “Duh, of course. Seriously, she might as well just pee on him to mark her territory.”

“Margaux, shut up,” Kylie said.

“Whatever. Anyway, the important thing is if Brendon knew she was applying there,” Margaux said. “Em, do you think he knew?”

I hoped Lauren was just trying to follow Brendon, but what if they had planned this whole thing while they were dating? What if he convinced her to apply there so they could go to college together, wear matching American flag sweaters with big scarves while drinking hot chocolate, and jump into leaf piles just like a preppy clothing catalog. At least now I didn’t have to worry about them reciting poetry to one another in South Bend, but still, what if they had made plans to go to school together?

“Don’t worry about it,” Kylie said. “She was probably trying to follow him—like she always does. She’s so pathetic.”

Kylie was trying to make me feel better, but Lauren was far from pathetic. After all, she was pretty much the “Most Likely to Succeed” poster girl. While she was out overachieving and saving the world without messing up her perfect, bouncy hair, I was trying to get through each day. I tried to push away the image of Lauren and Brendon holding hands and drinking hot chocolate under a stadium blanket.

Guest Post, Spotlight & Giveaway: WHAT FRESH SMELL by Jeffrey Marks

what-fresh-smell-large-banner340

As part of a Blog Tour organized by Great Escapes Free Virtual Book Tours,  I am pleased to have Jeffrey Marks as my guest today as he celebrates the release of What Fresh Smell, the third book in the Marissa Scott Mysteries series. A fan of puns,  Jeffrey is offering a free copy of his holiday-themed book,  Love Stinks, to anyone who leaves a punny title in the comments.

Ho-Ho-Homicide by Jeffrey Marks

Jeff_new.jpgWith the holidays coming up, I thought I might say a few words about another book in the Marissa Scott series, Love Stinks. All of the books in the series take place around a particular holiday, Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, Christmas, Father’s Day. Love Stinks, the second book in the series, takes place around the Christmas season, which is historically the busiest time at a mall.

This book was published second, but is actually a prequel to The Scent of Murder. If you prefer to read books sequentially in that universe, then Love Stinks would come first; however, if you prefer to read them by date of publication, then The Scent of Murder would precede it.

Love Stinks begins with Cincinnati’s favorite celebrity, Steve Douglas, coming back to town to tout his new cologne. When he arrives at Kantor’s department store, he begins his spiel, only to keel over dead on the podium. Since the death occurred in the cosmetics department, which Marissa manages, she is tasked with trying to bring order back to the department so sales are not impacted. Given the stress of dealing with Christmas sales, Marissa has to work with her friends to find out the murderer and get the department back to normal.

I love the title puns that I’ve been using in the books (Love Stinks, What Fresh Smell). I am thinking that the next one may be Smell in a Handbasket, but I won’t know for sure until the book is finished.

I’d be happy to give a free copy of Love Stinks to anyone who leaves a pun title (about noses, smells, scents, odors, etc) in the comment section.

Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000038_00061]About What Fresh Smell

There’s Murder in River City – Daycare that is.

When Marissa learns that a teacher at the daycare center has been murdered, she comes to the realization that she really didn’t know much about the people who worked there, especially the murdered woman. She’ll now have to manage her son, her mother, her mother’s Scottish terrier, and an ex-boyfriend as she tries to hunt down the people behind a robbery ring and the person who killed a daycare teacher. If she’s not careful, she might meet the same fate.

You can purchase the book on Amazon.

Spotlight & Guest Post: A WHOLE LATTE MURDER by Caroline Fardig

a-whole-latte-murder-large-banner448

As part of a Blog Tour organized by Great Escapes Free Virtual Book Tours,  I am pleased to have Caroline Fardig as my guest today as she celebrates her recently released addition to the Java Jive Mystery series – A Whole Latte Murder.  Having read and enjoyed a previous book in her Java Jive series, I look forward to reading this newest addition.

Writing’s effect on my life, or My life’s effect on my writing by Caroline Fardig

Caroline Fardig.jpegI love how writing has affected my life. I feel much more confident, and I’m much more well-spoken. I find that I notice people, places, and things more than I ever have—I guess it’s the writer in me looking for new ideas and inspiration. Conversely, I enjoy seeing what kind of effect that my life experiences have on my writing. Whenever I learn a life lesson or gain knowledge on a subject, it only makes my writing better.

I’ve had a really odd career path in my adult life. I went to college to be a music teacher, and I was for a while. I finally decided that teaching wasn’t for me, but I had learned some good life skills, such as crowd control and conflict resolution. At that point, I went in a completely different direction and became an insurance agent. It turns out, working with the general public in customer service and sales isn’t much different than working with whiny children. From working in the insurance business, I learned how to switch gears fast and wear many different hats—having to try to wheel and deal to sell someone a new policy right after having to empathize with a person who had been hurt in an accident. After my daughter was born, I took some time off to take care of her, and it was truly a wonderful experience. But, once she got in school, I felt like I needed something to do. I then got a job at a funeral home, being a greeter and helping with day-to-day tasks. It’s amazing how much work goes on behind the scenes of a funeral, and the difficult part is to make sure that everything gets done quickly, yet quietly and with the utmost respect and reverence for the dead as well as grieving family members. You have to be sympathetic, but not allow yourself to become emotional. From that job, I learned how to put my feelings aside to get my work done, and how to stay calm even when you think everything is going wrong.

My on-the-job training has become invaluable in my life, as well as in my writing. I can make my characters argue, and with what I’ve learned about dealing with conflict, I can easily maneuver them to a resolution—whether it be a positive or a negative one. In writing humorous books, it’s essential to be able to swiftly change the tone if a scene gets too deep and dark. From learning how to deal with different kinds of people and situations back to back, I can easily divert the characters away from getting too dramatic by shifting the focus of the scene to something lighter. When writing mysteries, you have to deal with death, and I’m often angered at how characters in books and movies lose a friend and just move on with the action like nothing happened. A lot of times, writers don’t allow their characters to take time to grieve. That’s something I wanted to do differently in my writing. My characters actually go to funerals, just like we would in real life, and take time to process what they’re feeling.

I’m grateful for all of the wonderful and unusual jobs I have had. Now, I can add writer to the list, which is another completely different experience. Being able to get your thoughts out on paper is very therapeutic, and I’m thankful that other people actually want to read what I write down.

Review & Giveaway: LOVE LITERARY STYLE by Karin Gillespie

love-literary-style-large-banner333
Time for a change of pace. Today’s post is about a recently released romantic comedy – Love  Literary Style – by Karin Gillespie.

Description

image004-2They say opposites attract, and what could be more opposite than a stuffy literary writer falling in love with a self-published romance writer?

Meet novelist Aaron Mite. He lives in a flea-infested rented alcove, and his girlfriend Emma, a combative bookstore owner, has just dumped him. He meets Laurie Lee at a writers’ colony and mistakenly believes her to be a renowned writer of important fiction. When he discovers she’s a self-published romance author, he’s already fallen in love with her.

Aaron thinks genre fiction is an affront to the fiction-writing craft. He likes to quote the essayist, Arthur Krystal, who claims literary fiction “melts the frozen sea inside of us.” Ironically Aaron doesn’t seem to realize that, despite his lofty literary aspirations, he’s emotionally frozen, due, in part, to a childhood tragedy. The vivacious Laurie, lover of flamingo-patterned attire and all things hot pink, is the one person who might be capable of melting him. In the tradition of the Rosie Project, Love Literary Style is a sparkling romantic comedy which pokes fun at the divide between so-called low and high brow fiction.

My Review

This was a fun read. Both main characters were well-developed and quirky  – but in extremely different ways. Their meeting is founded in a case of mistaken identity. The attraction between them is  immediate and strong, with humorous ups and downs as the story progresses.

I enjoyed the writer’s treatment of the issue of genre fiction vs. literature and the preconceived notions some people have about the different types of work and their authors.  Laurie’s enthusiasm for writing and her determination to become a published author shines through, making her an appealing character.  Aaron is not as likeable, at least not at first. He kind of grows on you. His backstory is the root behind many of his hang-ups and is only gradually revealed to Laurie and the reader as the plot progresses and reaches its satisfying finish.

I expect that readers who enjoy romance novels with a bit of humor will enjoy this book.
